Expensive top hats were made from beaver. Beaver matted together and shaped quite well. The demand for hats got to be so high that the beaver pelts were getting more scarce to get. Thus, the beaver got to be quite expensive. Mercury nitrate was used on cheaper rabbit fur because It caused the fibers of rabbit fur to to mat together better. This is called “carroting” Mercury nitrate not only caused the “hatters to go mad but severely damaged their nervous system. Causing shakes, nervousness, illness and sometimes death. It was at one time referred to as the hatter’s disease.
